Amalfi Travel and Transport: Coastal pictureA truly beautiful part of Italy, however you choose to reach Amalfi, you will be guaranteed to see some breathtaking scenery along the way. Bus transport is a particularly cheap way to travel around the Amalfi Coast and many tourists enjoy day trips to Naples and Sorrento by catching one of the regular SITA buses.

Alternatively, visitors may prefer the ultimate freedom provided by a rental car, travelling to neighbouring towns such as Positano and Salerno. However, be warned - the roads outside of Amalfi are extremely twisting and turning, and on the worst stretches, you hardly ever keep your steering wheel straight for more than just a few seconds.

Naples International Airport is the closest major airport to Amalfi and lies just 74 km / 46 miles to the north-west. With some five millions travellers using Naples Airport each year, this facility offers flights all around Italy and the world. For domestic flights, Air One is a busy Italian airline based in Rome, while international airlines include Air France, British Airways, Eurofly, First Choice Airways, Lufthansa, Thomsonfly and TUfly, amongst others. Currently, the transport options at Naples Airport does not travel directly to Amalfi, unless you book a private car or bus in advance of your arrival. You may be able to negotiate a reasonable price with a taxi driver, although most choose to catch a bus to the Naples Central Train Station on the Piazza Garibaldi, travel on a train to Sorrento, and from here, travel by bus or taxi into Amalfi. Worth noting, Pontecagnano Airport is a little closer and just to the east of Amalfi, close to Salerno, and although this is a much smaller facility, it is just beginning to offer flights to a limited selection of international destinations.

Cars can be rented at various locations around Amalfi and also at Naples International Airport. Whilst driving around by car is extremely convenient, many roads around the Amalfi Coast are rather steep, winding and narrow, hugging the cliffs and hillside, with occasional hairpin bends. Some routes are really suitable for only the more experienced of drivers, who are able to keep their eyes on the road and not be distracted by the gorgeous scenery and views. Some of the sharpest of corners often have a mirror strategically placed, so that you can see if a big lorry is coming the other way.

Book your Car Rental from Naples Airport here - excellent rates available, up to 65% discount.
